Vice Presidential Election 2025 LIVE: The election for the second-highest constitutional position in the country was necessitated due to the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21.
The stage is set for the Vice Presidential elections today (September 9), as members of both Houses of Parliament are voting to elect the country's next Vice President. It will be a direct contest between NDA's candidate CP Radhakrishnan and the Opposition's nominee, former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy. Polling is underway at the new Parliament building and will end at 5 pm, with counting of votes scheduled to begin at 6 pm. The results are expected later in the evening. The election was necessitated following the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, citing health reasons. With the BJP-led NDA holding a majority in Parliament, the alliance is seen to have a clear edge in the contest. The successful candidate needs at least 391 votes to become the next Vice President of India, and the NDA candidate Radhakrishnan is hopeful of getting the solid backing of at least 437 members (56%), well above the magic figure. Reddy is likely to get around 323 votes.
Among the early voters were Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Arjun Ram Meghwal and Kiren Rijiju. Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson Harivansh, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut and SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav were among others who came to cast their vote.
LJP (RV) MP Shambhavi Choudhary said, "We are absolutely sure and there is a full guarantee that our candidate will be the Vice President...CP Radhakrishnan's work so far has been very impressive...As true citizens of the country, we feel that he has done a lot for the country and he has the capability to take the country on the right path in the time to come...Congress doesn't understand that we are voting for our country to save the Constitution and democracy..."
BJP MP Anurag Thakur ahead of the Vice-Presidential elections said, "NDA’s candidate CP Radhakrishnan is a strong contender and will win with a huge majority. We are all working to ensure his victory. If Opposition members also want to support him because he represents the nation’s interest, they are welcome."
The Vice-President is elected by an Electoral College comprising members of both Houses of Parliament, including nominated members. State legislatures play no role in this election. The electoral college for the vice presidential election comprises a total of 788 members -- 245 from the Rajya Sabha and 543 from the Lok Sabha. The 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha are also eligible to vote in the election. The present strength of the electoral college is 781, as six seats are vacant in the Rajya Sabha and one in the Lok Sabha.
