Day 2 of the ongoing third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 between England and India at Lord’s continued to deliver high drama, as both teams remained locked in a tense battle. The day was marked not only by key performances but also by a fresh round of controversy surrounding the Dukes ball, which had to be replaced multiple times.
Bumrah’s Fiery Spell Rescues India
India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah once again underlined his status as a match-winner, delivering a superb spell in England’s first innings. Bowling a tireless 27 overs, Bumrah conceded 74 runs and claimed five crucial wickets, making a major dent in the English batting lineup. His ability to maintain pressure and extract movement even under challenging conditions was lauded by teammates and pundits alike.
However, it was not just Bumrah’s bowling that caught attention — the frequent ball changes during his spell became a major talking point.
Ball Changed Twice on Day 2
The Dukes ball was first changed early on Day 2 after going out of shape. However, the replacement ball also did not meet the standards expected in international cricket and had to be changed again after just 48 deliveries.
Addressing the media post-stumps, Bumrah was diplomatic but clearly frustrated with the issue.
“The ball changes, I don't really control that,” Bumrah said. “Obviously, I don't want to lose out on money because I work very hard and play a lot of overs. So, I don't want to say any controversial statements and get my match fees deducted. But we were bowling with the ball that we were given. That’s how it is. We can't change it. We can't fight it.”
His remarks subtly echoed concerns shared by several bowlers in the series about the inconsistency and poor quality of Dukes balls used so far.
India Trail by 242 Runs Ahead of Day 3
After bundling out England for 387 runs, India’s response with the bat began with a setback as Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for just 13 runs. The Indian innings, however, stabilised with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant putting together a crucial stand.
India ended Day 2 at 145/3, still trailing by 242 runs. With a deep batting order and two experienced campaigners at the crease, the visitors will be hopeful of narrowing the gap on Day 3.
Other Bowling Highlights:
Apart from Bumrah’s five-wicket haul, Mohammed Siraj and Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with two wickets each, showcasing a collective bowling effort from the Indian camp.
