Explosive Claim Sparks Pakistan-Wide Anxiety
Is Imran Khan dead? An explosive claim by Pakistani journalist Wajahat Saeed Khan that the former prime minister has died in Adiala Jail has triggered intense speculation and political anxiety across Pakistan. However, there is no independently verified evidence of his death, and Pakistani authorities and Adiala Jail officials have categorically rejected the reports, saying Khan is alive, healthy and receiving medical care.
What The Journalist Actually Claimed
In a YouTube video posted on August 10, Wajahat Saeed Khan said three senior officers allegedly based at Pakistan’s military headquarters in Rawalpindi had told him that “Imran Khan is no longer with us.” He linked the alleged information to Khan’s continued absence from public view.
Significantly, however, the journalist himself acknowledged that the officers had not personally witnessed anything and were reporting what they had heard. He therefore described the information as unconfirmed. The distinction is crucial: the explosive allegation is based on hearsay rather than independently established evidence.
The claim nevertheless spread rapidly across social media. A fabricated press release purportedly announcing Khan’s death also circulated, prompting Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to dismiss it as fake and urge people to reject irresponsible claims.
Jail Authorities Reject Death Reports
Adiala Jail authorities have firmly denied the rumours, reportedly stating that there is no truth to claims concerning Khan’s transfer or death. Officials said the former premier is in good health and receiving medical attention.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), however, has demanded greater transparency. The party argues that Khan’s restricted access to family members, lawyers and personal doctors has created conditions in which rumours can flourish. PTI leaders have demanded that his sisters and medical team be allowed to meet him and independently establish his condition.
The party has also warned of major mobilisation if access remains restricted, reflecting the explosive political potential of the controversy.
Why Imran Khan Remains So Politically Sensitive
Khan, Pakistan’s former prime minister and PTI founder, has been imprisoned since August 2023 in connection with multiple legal cases, including the £190 million corruption case. His imprisonment has remained one of the country’s most contentious political issues.
Repeated allegations of isolation and inadequate medical access have already fuelled speculation about his health. Similar death rumours circulated in November 2025, but were subsequently debunked after his sister met him and reported that he was physically well.
This history explains why even an unverified report can rapidly become a national political flashpoint.
Transparency Is the Strongest Antidote
The latest episode exposes a dangerous information vacuum surrounding one of Pakistan’s most polarising political figures. Rumours thrive when access is restricted and independent verification is difficult. Until credible evidence emerges, claims of Imran Khan’s death should be treated strictly as unverified allegations.
At the same time, authorities can prevent further escalation by allowing appropriate family, legal and medical access and providing credible information about his condition. In Pakistan’s deeply contested political environment, transparency is no longer simply a matter of reassurance—it is essential to preventing rumour from becoming unrest.
