A Delhi court on Friday sentenced former Aam Aadmi Party councillor Tahir Hussain and four other convicts to life imprisonment for the murder of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots. Describing the killing as a “very serious incident” that shook society, the court highlighted the extreme brutality involved and the breakdown of law and order during the violence. The sentencing comes more than six years after Sharma was killed and marks a significant development in one of the most closely watched cases arising from the riots.
Ankit Sharma Murder: Brief Background
Ankit Sharma, an IB staffer, was killed on February 26, 2020, during communal violence in the Dayalpur-Chand Bagh area. His body, carrying multiple stab and blunt-force injuries, was subsequently recovered from a drain near Hussain’s residence.
Hussain, who was then an elected AAP councillor, was accused of involvement in the mob attack that targeted Sharma. The case subsequently became one of the most prominent criminal proceedings linked to the Northeast Delhi riots.

The Karkardooma Court had convicted Hussain and several co-accused on July 13, 2026, for offences including murder, rioting and promoting enmity, while some accused were acquitted and conspiracy charges were dropped for insufficient evidence.
During Friday’s sentencing hearing, Delhi Police and the prosecution sought the death penalty, arguing that the crime represented a “rarest of rare” case because of its brutality and communal context.
However, the court awarded Hussain and four other convicts life imprisonment for murder and related offences. The judge noted the “utmost brutality” of the attack, observing that Sharma was assaulted severely and that his body was subsequently dragged and thrown into a drain.
