Officials are closely monitoring river gauges as the released water is expected to pass through critical locations such as Khairmal and Mundali before entering the lower Mahanadi delta.
The greatest concern lies in the coastal floodplains, where multiple distributaries, low elevation, sediment accumulation, and tidal influence significantly slow drainage. Even when rainfall in coastal Odisha remains moderate, heavy precipitation in the upper basin can trigger widespread flooding downstream, underscoring the interconnected nature of the Mahanadi River system.
Recent reports indicate that rainfall in the upper catchment has begun to ease slightly, allowing the reservoir level to stabilize. Nevertheless, the substantial discharge through 22 gates continues, requiring sustained vigilance from disaster management authorities.

The current situation highlights the delicate balance between engineering decisions and disaster preparedness.
