Mountaineering World Watches as Broad Peak Rescue Begins

The mountaineering world is facing a major crisis after an avalanche struck Broad Peak, an 8,047-metre mountain in Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan, leaving 10 climbers missing, including renowned Nepal-born British mountaineer Nirmal “Nims” Purja. The avalanche struck on July 30 as an international expedition was operating at high altitude. Pakistani rescuers have located four bodies, while Purja and other climbers remain unaccounted for. Search operations involving helicopters and ground teams are being conducted under extremely difficult weather and terrain conditions.

Broad Peak Avalanche Triggers Major Rescue Operation

According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the avalanche struck the team at around 6,600 metres, between higher camps, abruptly cutting communication with the climbers. The expedition included mountaineers from Nepal, Pakistan, Oman, the United States and China. The scale of the incident and the altitude have made immediate rescue exceptionally difficult.

Four bodies have been located in the avalanche debris, although identification and recovery have been complicated by the terrain. Two Pakistani Army Aviation helicopters have been mobilised for the search, while ground teams are also preparing to operate when conditions permit.

Who Is Nirmal “Nims” Purja?

Purja, widely known as Nimsdai, is one of the most accomplished high-altitude climbers of the modern era. Born in Nepal and later becoming a British citizen, he previously served with the Gurkhas and Royal Marines, before turning fully to mountaineering.

He achieved global fame through Project Possible, completing all 14 of the world's 8,000-metre peaks in just 189 days in 2019, smashing the previous record of almost eight years. His extraordinary achievement was later featured in the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.

Purja was also part of the historic all-Nepali team that completed the first winter ascent of K2 in January 2021. With more than 50 ascents of 8,000-metre peaks, he has become one of the most prolific climbers in the high-altitude mountaineering community.

What Investigators Know About the Avalanche

Initial information suggests the climbers were moving toward or preparing for a summit attempt when the avalanche swept through the upper mountain. At such elevations, an avalanche can rapidly bury climbers, destroy camps and sever radio or satellite communications.

The absence of contact does not by itself establish the fate of every missing climber. Rescuers therefore face the difficult task of determining whether survivors may be sheltering in higher camps or other protected areas while simultaneously searching avalanche debris.

Weather Remains the Biggest Rescue Challenge

The rescue effort is being constrained by severe weather, extreme altitude, unstable snow and the risk of additional avalanches. Helicopter operations in the Karakoram are particularly dependent on visibility, wind and flying conditions, while ground teams face slow and dangerous movement across steep terrain.

The recovery of four bodies has intensified fears about the scale of the tragedy, but authorities have yet to establish the identities of all those found or determine the fate of the remaining climbers.

A Race Against Time on a Dangerous Giant

Broad Peak has repeatedly demonstrated the dangers of high-altitude climbing, where weather can change rapidly and even experienced mountaineers have limited options once an avalanche begins. The latest disaster underscores that expertise and experience cannot eliminate the inherent risks of the world's highest mountains.

For now, the priority remains clear: locate the missing climbers, recover those who have died and establish the facts of the disaster. For Purja's family, fellow climbers and admirers around the world, the rescue operation represents a race against time—and a final hope that some of those still missing may yet be found alive.
