Reliance Q2 Profit Surges 41% as O2C and Jio Shine

Reliance Q2 results have surprised the market, with Reliance Industries reporting a 41% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit attributable to shareholders to ₹25,548 crore ($2.69 billion) for the September quarter. The performance comfortably exceeded the average analyst estimate of ₹21,419 crore compiled by LSEG. Record earnings from its oil-to-chemicals (O2C) business and continued growth in Jio Platforms were the principal drivers. However, weaker profitability in retail highlights an uneven performance across the conglomerate's major businesses.

What Drove Reliance's Strong Quarterly Performance?

Reliance Industries, led by Chairman Mukesh Ambani, has developed a diversified business model spanning energy, petrochemicals, telecommunications, digital services and retail.

Its Jamnagar refining and petrochemical complex remains a major earnings contributor, while Jio Platforms has emerged as a significant growth engine. The latest results are particularly important because they follow Jio Platforms' much-anticipated stock-market debut earlier in the week, bringing greater investor attention to its financial performance.

The quarter demonstrates how Reliance is benefiting from both favourable global energy-market conditions and the expansion of its digital businesses.

O2C Business Delivers Record Earnings

The oil-to-chemicals division emerged as the biggest contributor to the quarter's operating performance, accounting for approximately 41% of Reliance's total operating profit.

Its financial performance was particularly impressive:

·       EBITDA: Increased 67.9% to a record ₹25,203 crore, against ₹15,008 crore a year earlier.

·       Revenue: Rose 44.2% to ₹2,31,601 crore.

·       EBITDA margin: Expanded by 160 basis points to 10.9%.

Tight global fuel markets, improved petrochemical margins and resilient domestic demand supported the performance.

Despite disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, Reliance maintained record crude-processing volumes by diversifying procurement across the Middle East, Europe, Latin America and North America. It also redirected fuel exports towards higher-value markets in Africa, Europe and Latin America.

This flexibility helped the company manage supply-chain uncertainties and freight-cost pressures.

Jio Platforms Strengthens Its Growth Story

Jio continued to deliver steady financial improvement, reinforcing its position as one of Reliance's most valuable businesses.

Its quarterly performance included:

·       Revenue increased 11% to ₹40,475 crore.

·       EBITDA rose 16.6% to ₹21,879 crore.

·       Net profit climbed approximately 14% to ₹8,387 crore.

·       EBITDA margin improved 250 basis points to 54.1%.

The numbers indicate that Jio is increasingly shifting from subscriber acquisition towards monetisation, higher customer spending and improved operating efficiency.

Retail Emerges as the Weakest Link

Reliance Retail delivered a comparatively weaker performance, indicating that consumer demand and profitability remain challenging.

Although comparable gross revenue increased 6.4% to ₹91,716 crore, profitability declined:

·       Net profit fell 24.5% to ₹2,619 crore.

·       EBITDA before a one-time impairment declined 8.6% to ₹6,228 crore.

·       EBITDA margin contracted to 7.8%, compared with 9% a year earlier.

The performance suggests uneven consumer spending, changing digital purchasing patterns and pressure on sales conversion. The late festive-season impact may also have influenced business momentum.

For investors, retail's declining profitability is an important concern, particularly when O2C and Jio are delivering stronger earnings.

What Investors Must Watch Next

Reliance's future performance will depend on three important factors:

·       Whether global refining and petrochemical margins remain favourable.

·       Whether Jio can sustain subscriber growth, higher customer monetisation and margin expansion following its market debut.

·       Whether Reliance Retail can recover profitability and improve operating efficiency.

The company's ability to balance cyclical energy earnings with the more predictable growth potential of digital services will remain central to its valuation.

Reliance's Growth Story Faces Its Next Test

Reliance Industries' September-quarter performance demonstrates the strength of its diversified business model and its ability to capitalise on opportunities arising from global energy-market volatility. Record O2C earnings and Jio's expanding profitability have provided a powerful boost to consolidated results.

However, retail's declining margins reveal that not every business is progressing at the same pace. The bigger question is whether Reliance can sustain its exceptional energy-sector performance while converting Jio's digital expansion into long-term earnings growth.

Ultimately, the results reinforce Mukesh Ambani's strategy of building Reliance into an integrated energy, consumer and technology powerhouse. Sustaining that momentum will require not just revenue growth, but consistent profitability across all three major business verticals.
