FBI Raids Ex-Lawmaker Swalwell’s Home

Federal agents have escalated an investigation involving former U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, seizing electronic devices from him at San Francisco International Airport and subsequently searching his Washington, D.C., residence. The actions are connected to an ongoing federal investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and assault.

According to reports, agents seized Swalwell’s electronic devices at the airport on August 15 and searched his Washington home the following day. The execution of search warrants represents a significant escalation in an investigation that has been developing since allegations against the former California congressman became public.

Swalwell resigned from Congress in April 2026 and withdrew from California’s gubernatorial race after multiple women accused him of misconduct, including sexual assault and sending unsolicited explicit material. Swalwell has denied the allegations, and the investigation has not resulted in criminal charges against him as of the latest reports.

The case is receiving additional attention because authorities in multiple jurisdictions have reportedly examined related allegations. The FBI and Justice Department have not publicly detailed the evidence sought through the latest searches or indicated what investigators recovered.

Digital Evidence Moves to the Center

The seizure of electronic devices is important because smartphones, computers and cloud-connected accounts can potentially contain communications, photographs, location information, metadata and other records relevant to establishing timelines and interactions. A search or seizure, however, does not establish guilt; it means investigators obtained legal authorization to seek evidence relevant to their inquiry.

For public figures, the case also demonstrates how allegations can produce consequences well before a criminal case reaches court. Swalwell’s resignation and withdrawal from the governor’s race have already dramatically altered his political trajectory, while the federal investigation now raises the stakes further.

The central question now is what investigators find in the seized digital evidence and whether prosecutors determine that there is sufficient evidence to pursue charges. Until then, the allegations remain allegations, and Swalwell continues to deny them.
