RBI’s Bhubaneswar data centre: A strategic shield for India’s financial core. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s ₹169-crore Data Centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute at Info Valley-II, Jatni, near Bhubaneswar, on October 25, 2026. The facility represents a significant investment in safeguarding India’s digital financial infrastructure while strengthening cybersecurity expertise and positioning Odisha as an emerging technology destination.
A High-Resilience Financial Infrastructure Hub
Spread across 18.55 acres in Khurda district, the campus integrates a high-resilience data centre with a specialised cybersecurity training institute. It is the RBI’s second data centre after Navi Mumbai, providing geographical separation between critical technology facilities.
The centre has secured Tier IV accreditation from the Uptime Institute, the highest level in its classification framework. This certification signifies fault-tolerant infrastructure designed to withstand equipment failures without disrupting essential operations.
As digital banking and electronic transactions expand, reliable computing infrastructure has become indispensable to financial stability.
Protecting India’s Digital Payment Backbone
The centre will support mission-critical payment and settlement infrastructure, including the Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) systems. These platforms underpin high-value transfers and everyday banking transactions across India.
Its strategic importance lies in redundancy and disaster recovery. By providing an alternative operational base for the primary Navi Mumbai facility, Bhubaneswar can help maintain continuity during technical failures, cyberattacks or natural disasters.
The location also offers geographical diversification from other critical infrastructure. Such separation reduces the risk of a single regional disruption affecting the RBI’s wider technology operations.
Cybersecurity: Building Expertise Alongside Infrastructure
The accompanying Cybersecurity Training Institute addresses the growing need for skilled professionals capable of defending financial systems against increasingly sophisticated threats.
Its programmes will cover cybersecurity, enterprise technology, data science, cloud computing and artificial intelligence, serving RBI personnel, commercial-bank employees and other financial-sector professionals.
With digital payments operating around the clock, threats such as ransomware, data theft, fraud and system disruption demand continuous investment in both technology and expertise. Strengthening institutional capabilities is therefore essential to maintaining public confidence in digital finance.
Sovereign Control and Odisha’s Technology Ambitions
The facility’s independent operation, without reliance on third-party cloud providers, strengthens the RBI’s control over critical systems and reduces vendor dependency. This is particularly important when managing sensitive supervisory information and essential payment infrastructure.
The project also supports Odisha’s ambition to move beyond its traditional mining-led economy towards advanced technology, electronics, semiconductor manufacturing and data-centre development.
Securing Financial Trust for India’s Digital Future
With its foundation stone laid in March 2023, the campus represents a sustained effort to strengthen national financial resilience. Its significance extends beyond Bhubaneswar: it reinforces the principle that digital inclusion must be matched by security, reliability and operational preparedness.
Ultimately, a resilient financial system requires more than faster payments; it demands infrastructure that remains secure and dependable under pressure. The RBI’s Bhubaneswar facility strengthens that foundation while giving Odisha a strategic role in India’s evolving digital economy.
