Political controversy reignites over comments made during Bharat Jodo Yatra

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, was granted bail on Thursday by a court in Nashik, Maharashtra, in a defamation case linked to his alleged remarks about Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar during the 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra. Gandhi appeared before the court via video conferencing and pleaded not guilty.

The complaint was filed by Nashik resident and NGO director Devendra Bhutada, accusing Gandhi of making derogatory remarks about Savarkar during a press conference in Hingoli and a public speech. The case has been registered under Sections 500 (defamation) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the complaint, Gandhi stated that "Savarkar wrote mercy petitions to the British and later promised to work for them." The complainant alleged that these remarks tarnished the legacy of Savarkar and hurt the sentiments of his followers.

Judge R C Narwadia granted bail to Gandhi on a surety bond of ₹15,000. His legal team submitted the bail application after he entered a not-guilty plea through the virtual appearance.
