Nandigram bypoll candidate Milan Pradhan was arrested in West Bengal hours after former chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced her faction’s support for him, drawing sharp political reactions. Nandigram’s Political Legacy
Nandigram has remained one of West Bengal’s most politically significant constituencies since the 2007 protests against land acquisition for a proposed chemical hub. The movement became closely associated with Mamata Banerjee’s rise and the eventual end of the Left Front’s 34-year rule in 2011. Its political importance returned during the 2021 Assembly election, when Mamata contested the seat against her former party colleague Suvendu Adhikari, who later joined the BJP.
TMC Split Deepens Electoral Uncertainty
The Election Commission has frozen the original Trinamool Congress name and its traditional “flowers and grass” symbol amid the factional dispute. Mamata Banerjee’s faction has been allotted the name “Mamata All India Trinamool Congress” and the “Football Player” symbol, while the rival faction led by Arup Roy has been assigned “Democratic Trinamool Congress” and the “Envelope” symbol. Banerjee has challenged the Election Commission’s decision in the Supreme Court.
The dispute directly affected Nandigram. Mamata’s faction had fielded Sanchita Pradhan Dey, but she withdrew her candidature after meeting Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. With no candidate remaining, Banerjee announced support for Congress nominee Milan Pradhan, describing the move as an effort to strengthen the INDIA bloc.
Arrest Adds a New Political Dimension
Pradhan was arrested on September 18 in connection with an old murder case reportedly linked to the 2007 Nandigram violence. Reports say he was named in multiple cases connected with the agitation, although specific details surrounding the latest arrest and the precise charges require consideration of police and court records.
The timing immediately became the central political issue. Banerjee questioned why an old case was being acted upon immediately after her faction extended support to Pradhan. Congress leaders similarly alleged that the arrest was politically motivated and questioned whether opposition candidates were being denied adequate political space.
BJP Rejects Opposition’s Political Narrative
The BJP and its leaders have rejected the opposition’s allegations. Union minister Kiren Rijiju, amid the wider political confrontation, criticised Congress over its accusations concerning political splits and countered that Congress itself had a history of political fragmentation.

The arrest has transformed an already complicated bypoll into a contest involving electoral strategy, factional politics and legal proceedings.
