Assam Espionage Probe: Two Held Over Pakistan Links

Assam Police have arrested two individuals, including a retired Army personnel engaged with the police on a contractual basis, for allegedly sharing sensitive security information with Pakistani intelligence operatives. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the arrests followed intelligence inputs received from central agencies.

One of the accused has been identified as Abhishek Kumar Singh, 31, a resident of Purba Champaran in Bihar, who was staying in rented accommodation in Guwahati. Preliminary information concerning his activities was reportedly provided by Military Intelligence of the Tezpur-based Gajraj Corps.

Acting on the inputs, the Assam Police Special Task Force, in coordination with Sonitpur Police, developed further intelligence suggesting that Singh was allegedly engaged in activities considered prejudicial to national security and was operating under the direction of a Pakistani intelligence operative.

The STF subsequently conducted an operation during the intervening night of October 3 and 4 and apprehended Singh from his Guwahati residence. Police said a mobile phone, SIM cards and documents considered potentially incriminating were recovered and are being examined as part of the investigation.

According to Chief Minister Sarma, the two accused were allegedly communicating with Pakistani handlers and are suspected of sharing information concerning the movement of Indian Army personnel. He said the suspects would be handed over to central agencies for a more detailed investigation.

Preliminary information also suggests that the accused may have been honey-trapped to obtain sensitive information, although the allegation remains under investigation. The case once again highlights the growing insider-threat challenge facing national security agencies, where human manipulation and digital communication can potentially bypass conventional security controls. Investigators are now working to establish the extent of the alleged contacts, what information was shared and whether other individuals were involved.
