The Central government has agreed to hold a 16-hour-long discussion in the Lok Sabha on Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terror attack, following sustained pressure from the Opposition. However, the debate is expected to take place next week, prompting protests from Opposition MPs who are demanding an immediate discussion this week.
The matter was discussed in the Business Advisory Committee, where government representatives cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming foreign visit as the reason for scheduling the debate next week. The Opposition, however, insists the Prime Minister, as well as Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, must be present during the debate.
House Disrupted, Lok Sabha Adjourned
Proceedings in the Lok Sabha were adjourned four times on Monday, eventually for the entire day, as Opposition members raised slogans and disrupted the session over the delay in discussion.
When the House reconvened at 4 PM, Deputy Speaker Dilip Saikia attempted to proceed with a bill concerning the readjustment of Goa Assembly seats, but the protest continued, forcing adjournment.
Earlier, at 2 PM, Sandhya Ray, who was in the Chair, also adjourned the session due to unrelenting sloganeering. This marks a rocky start to the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Operation Sindoor & Pahalgam Terror Attack
Operation Sindoor refers to a recent cross-border military operation reportedly targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan, carried out by Indian forces following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. The Opposition is demanding accountability and an official statement from the highest level of government on both incidents.
Other Demands from the Opposition
Apart from Operation Sindoor, Opposition parties have also called for:
-
A debate on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.
-
Discussion on the continuing situation in Manipur.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has assured the Opposition that the government is ready for an extensive debate on all issues allowed by the Speaker.
