Priya Nair to Helm HUL: The Trailblazer Breaking a 92-Year Glass Ceiling

A Historic First for Hindustan Unilever

In a landmark moment for Indian corporate history, Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) has announced Priya Nair as its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, making her the first woman to head the FMCG giant in its 92-year legacy. Her appointment will take effect from August 1, 2025, succeeding current CEO Rohit Jawa, who steps down on July 31, 2025.

Currently serving as the President of Unilever’s Beauty and Wellbeing division, overseeing a €13 billion portfolio, Nair brings with her deep expertise in brand building, consumer insight, and market strategy. She will also join the HUL Board, pending approvals, while continuing her role on the Unilever Leadership Executive (ULE).

Early Life and Academic Roots

Priya Nair was born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, to Malayalee parents, and spent her formative years in Mumbai, where her early education laid the foundation for her analytical and creative outlook.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounts and Statistics from Sydenham College, Mumbai. Keen to pursue a career in marketing, she earned her MBA in Marketing from the Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune, and later honed her leadership skills at Harvard Business School through a specialised management course.

Today, she is based in London, lives with her husband, and is a mother to a daughter.

From Intern to Industry Leader: A Journey at HUL

Nair’s professional journey is as rich as it is inspiring. She joined HUL in 1995 as a Consumer Insights Manager, a role that marked her entry into the deeply consumer-centric world of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG).

In 1998, she moved into the brand domain, becoming Brand Manager for household names like Dove, Rin, and Comfort. By 2004, she was promoted to Marketing Manager, and by 2007, rose to General Manager. Two years later, she took charge of HUL’s western region, a crucial operational base.

Nair’s climb continued through leadership roles in Home Care and Beauty & Personal Care across South Asia, before moving to Unilever’s global fold. In 2022, she became the Global Chief Marketing Officer for Beauty & Wellbeing, and just a year later, in 2023, was elevated to President of the division, responsible for global brands like Sunsilk, Clear, Vaseline, and Dove, as well as Unilever’s health and prestige beauty portfolio.

A Track Record of Turning Around Business

Nair is credited with delivering tangible results during her previous tenure as Executive Director of Home Care at HUL (2014–2020). She steered a dramatic turnaround, improving EBIT margins in the segment by 570 basis points, from 13.1% in FY14 to 18.8% in FY20. This performance uplift played a significant role in pushing HUL’s overall EBIT margin from 15% to 22.3% during the same period.

Her leadership style—marked by deep consumer empathy, digital agility, and market responsiveness—is now being looked at as the catalyst needed to steer HUL out of its current growth plateau.

Challenges Ahead: A Flat Growth Curve and Fierce Competition

Nair takes over at a time when HUL’s growth trajectory has slowed. Under Rohit Jawa, who began his term in 2023, the company faced muted volume and revenue growth, with annual increases stuck between 2–3%. Over the last six years, volume growth has hovered below 5%, even as new-age startups disrupt the beauty and personal care market.

Despite a revenue of ₹61,469 crore and net profit of ₹10,644 crore in FY25, concerns over market share and innovation remain. The market has responded positively to Nair’s appointment, with HUL shares jumping nearly 5% post-announcement to ₹2,518.65 on the BSE—a sign of investor confidence in her leadership.

Adding weight to her appointment is Unilever Global CEO Fernando Fernandez’s recent statement, calling India one of the company’s two “anchor markets” and pledging a “double down on India” strategy in 2024. With the spotlight on India, Nair’s role becomes even more critical.

A Leader for a New Era

Priya Nair’s elevation to the top job at HUL is more than just a milestone for gender diversity—it signals a strategic pivot in the company's approach to growth, innovation, and leadership. Her blend of Indian market insight and global exposure, coupled with a proven history of performance turnarounds, makes her well-equipped to navigate HUL through its next chapter.

In a sector facing rapid shifts in consumer behaviour, digital disruption, and competitive intensity, Nair’s challenge will be to reignite growth, drive innovation, and retain HUL’s industry leadership. And if her career so far is any indication, the company may well be in the best hands for the job.
