White House Urges Iran Deal as US Boosts Military Presence

The White House has warned that Iran would be “very wise” to reach a deal with the United States, as President Donald Trump considers potential military options against Tehran’s nuclear programme. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump remains open to diplomacy but acknowledged there are “many reasons” some argue for military action.

The comments come amid a significant US military build-up in the region. Satellite tracking has confirmed the presence of the USS Abraham Lincoln near Iran, while the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest warship, is reportedly en route to the Middle East. US officials indicated that all deployed forces are expected to be in position by mid-March.

At the same time, diplomatic engagement continues. Indirect talks between US and Iranian officials in Geneva, mediated by Oman, showed what both sides described as limited progress. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there was agreement on “guiding principles,” though substantial differences remain. Washington also confirmed some progress but stressed the two sides are still “far apart” on key issues.

The US and European allies suspect Iran is advancing toward nuclear weapons capability—an allegation Tehran denies. Iran has insisted discussions focus solely on its nuclear programme and potential sanctions relief, while Washington wants missile development included.

Tensions have further escalated with Iran conducting maritime drills in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route. As negotiations continue, the balance between diplomacy and deterrence remains fragile, with regional stability hanging in the balance.
