Google has introduced a new AI-powered system called Groundsource to improve the prediction of urban flash floods. Integrated with Google Flood Hub, the technology can forecast flash floods up to 24 hours in advance, giving communities more time to prepare.

The announcement was highlighted by Sundar Pichai, who said the model was developed to address the long-standing shortage of reliable data on flash floods. The system aims to strengthen disaster preparedness by delivering earlier and more accurate warnings.

Groundsource uses the capabilities of Google Gemini to analyse decades of public reports and historical records. Through this process, the AI identified more than 2.6 million historical flood events across over 150 countries, creating one of the largest datasets for flood forecasting.

To improve geographic accuracy, the system used Google Maps to determine the boundaries of flood events, helping create a structured dataset focused on urban flash floods, which often occur suddenly with little warning.

Google said the dataset will be made open-source for researchers and partners, supporting further work in disaster prediction and climate resilience.

With this update, Flood Hub now combines riverine flood forecasting with urban flash flood prediction, expanding its coverage for extreme weather events. Currently, Google’s river flood forecasts already support around 2 billion people in more than 150 countries.

The company said the Groundsource methodology could eventually be applied to other natural disasters such as landslides and heat waves, strengthening global early warning systems powered by artificial intelligence.
