Hyderabad Plans Driverless Pod Taxi Network

Hyderabad is preparing to introduce a futuristic public transport system with the Telangana government approving a Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) network of driverless pod taxis. The project is aimed at easing the persistent “last-mile” connectivity challenges faced by nearly 500,000 daily metro commuters.

While metro ridership remains strong, many passengers struggle to reach offices and homes due to high auto fares, limited feeder services, and heavy road congestion. The proposed pod taxis will operate on dedicated elevated corridors, allowing them to bypass traffic and offer predictable travel times.

The first phase will focus on high-density commercial and administrative zones, including Rayadurgam to Hitech City and Kukatpally, the Financial District and Knowledge City, and areas around the Secretariat. These corridors serve major IT hubs and government offices, making them ideal for rapid transit integration.

Each automated pod will accommodate six to eight passengers and travel at speeds of up to 40 km per hour. The system is designed to handle approximately 10,000 passengers per hour. Fully electric and battery-operated, the pods will offer zero-emission transport aligned with sustainability goals.

The project will be executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) structure using a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer framework. Consultants are being appointed to assess technical feasibility and financial viability before rollout.

If successfully implemented, Hyderabad’s pod taxi network could become a model for other Indian cities exploring smart, congestion-free urban mobility solutions.
