Mahindra Accelerates EV Push on Strong Quarterly Growth

Mahindra Plans to Double EV Capacity as Profit Rises

Mahindra & Mahindra has reinforced its electric mobility ambitions after reporting a robust financial performance for the June quarter, with higher revenues and profits providing the company with fresh momentum to accelerate its EV expansion strategy. Riding on sustained demand for its SUVs and farm equipment, the automaker has announced plans to significantly scale up electric vehicle (EV) production capacity over the next two years. The move underlines Mahindra's determination to strengthen its position in India's rapidly evolving passenger vehicle market and intensify competition with established players in both electric and conventional vehicle segments.

Strong Core Businesses Fuel the EV Transition

Mahindra's growth story has traditionally been driven by two strong pillars—its leadership in the farm equipment business and its expanding SUV portfolio. This balanced business model has enabled the company to weather market fluctuations while maintaining consistent profitability.

During the June quarter, the company's farm equipment division recorded a 19 per cent increase in revenue, reflecting resilient rural demand. Meanwhile, revenue from its SUV business grew 24.4 per cent, highlighting continued consumer preference for Mahindra's utility vehicle lineup in urban as well as semi-urban markets.

Leveraging this financial strength, Mahindra has steadily invested in building its electric vehicle ecosystem. Over the past year, the company has expanded EV production capabilities at its Chakan manufacturing facility and laid the groundwork for a broader portfolio of born-electric SUVs that will support its long-term electrification roadmap.

Expansion Plans Gather Momentum

For the June quarter, Mahindra reported a 23 per cent rise in consolidated revenue, while consolidated net profit also increased sharply, supported by higher vehicle volumes and a favourable product mix.

However, the company acknowledged that operating margins on a standalone basis narrowed due to rising commodity prices and higher input costs, indicating that inflationary pressures continue to impact profitability despite strong demand.

The most significant announcement was Mahindra's decision to double its electric vehicle manufacturing capacity. Having already increased monthly EV production at its Chakan plant, the company now plans further expansion through additional manufacturing capacity and new model launches over the coming years.

The strategy reflects Mahindra's confidence that India's EV market will witness rapid growth, creating opportunities for manufacturers capable of scaling production efficiently.

Why the Expansion Matters

Mahindra's aggressive EV strategy has broader implications for India's automotive industry.

·       Strengthens competition in India's rapidly expanding EV segment.

·       Enables faster rollout of Mahindra's upcoming electric SUV portfolio.

·       Reduces dependence on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles over time.

·       Supports economies of scale through higher production capacity.

·       Reinforces investments in manufacturing, supply chains and battery technologies.

·       Positions Mahindra as a long-term challenger to leading EV manufacturers.

·       Demonstrates how profitable legacy businesses can finance the transition to clean mobility.

The announcement also reflects an important shift in India's automobile sector—from merely launching electric vehicles to building large-scale manufacturing ecosystems capable of sustaining long-term growth.

Driving India's Next Phase of Automotive Transformation

Mahindra's latest quarterly performance demonstrates that financial strength and strategic vision can complement each other in a rapidly changing automotive landscape. Strong earnings from its farm and SUV businesses are providing the capital needed to accelerate its electric mobility ambitions without compromising operational stability. While rising input costs remain a challenge, the company's commitment to doubling EV capacity signals confidence in the future of India's electric vehicle market. As competition intensifies among domestic and global automakers, Mahindra's integrated approach—combining manufacturing scale, product innovation and sustained investment—could position it as one of the defining players in India's transition towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
