Residents of the Delhi-NCR region received some relief on household expenses as the price of piped natural gas (PNG) for cooking was reduced with effect from January 1. The revision comes amid easing global energy prices and improved supply conditions, offering modest but timely support to domestic consumers.
Piped cooking gas is widely used in urban homes across Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Gurugram, and other NCR areas due to its convenience, safety, and cleaner-burning properties compared to traditional fuels. The price reduction is expected to slightly lower monthly kitchen expenses, especially for families that rely entirely on PNG for daily cooking.
Industry experts note that PNG prices are influenced by multiple factors, including global natural gas benchmarks, exchange rates, and domestic gas allocation policies. Over the past year, volatility in international energy markets had led to higher costs for consumers. The latest cut reflects a more stable pricing environment and improved cost dynamics for city gas distributors.
The move also aligns with the government’s broader push to promote cleaner fuels and expand the use of natural gas in households. PNG is considered more environmentally friendly than LPG cylinders, as it reduces carbon emissions and eliminates the need for frequent refills.
While the reduction may appear marginal, consumer groups say even small price corrections matter at a time when households are managing rising costs across food, education, and healthcare. Further revisions will depend on global energy trends and domestic supply conditions in the coming months.
