Modi Unveils Mega Development Push Across Southern India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant visit to Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka on Saturday, where he will inaugurate, dedicate and lay the foundation stone for development projects worth more than ₹17,900 crore. The packed itinerary includes the inauguration of the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram, the foundation stone for Andhra Pradesh's first semiconductor manufacturing facility, major renewable energy and highway projects, and the launch of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre (Viveka Smaraka) in Mysuru. The visit highlights the Centre's continued emphasis on infrastructure-led economic growth alongside cultural and youth-centric initiatives in strategically important southern states.
Bhogapuram and Mysuru: Two Strategic Destinations
Bhogapuram, located in Andhra Pradesh's Vizianagaram district, has emerged as a key component of the state's long-term infrastructure vision. The greenfield airport is expected to become the primary aviation hub for North Coastal Andhra, easing pressure on the existing Visakhapatnam airport while supporting tourism, logistics, exports and industrial expansion.
Mysuru, meanwhile, occupies a unique place in India's cultural history due to its association with Swami Vivekananda, who stayed there in 1892 before his famous Chicago address. The city has increasingly become a focal point for initiatives promoting youth empowerment, spirituality and cultural heritage.
Mega Infrastructure Package Across Multiple Sectors
According to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the projects span aviation, semiconductors, renewable energy, power transmission, highways and youth development.
The centrepiece is the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport, developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) by the GMR Group at a cost exceeding ₹5,640 crore. Designed to handle nearly six million passengers annually, the airport features modern passenger terminals, cargo facilities and advanced aviation infrastructure. It is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity while generating employment and attracting investment.
Prime Minister Modi will also lay the foundation stone for Andhra Pradesh's first semiconductor manufacturing unit in Visakhapatnam. Developed in collaboration with South Korea's APACT, the facility aims to produce around 96 million semiconductor chips annually, strengthening India's ambition to become a global electronics manufacturing hub.
Boost to Green Energy and Road Connectivity
The Prime Minister will inaugurate critical power transmission systems connecting renewable energy zones in Kurnool and Ananthapuram. Implemented by POWERGRID and other agencies with investments of around ₹4,370 crore, the transmission infrastructure will facilitate efficient evacuation of solar and wind power into the national grid, supporting India's clean energy transition.
Additionally, National Highway projects worth over ₹1,880 crore will be launched. These include sections of NH-365BG, the Tadipatri bypass on NH-67 and a high-level bridge on NH-565, improving connectivity across industrial corridors, agricultural regions and hinterland districts.
Mysuru's Viveka Smaraka: Blending Heritage with Youth Development
Later in the day, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre (Viveka Smaraka) at the Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama in Mysuru. Constructed at the historic site where Vivekananda stayed during his 1892 visit, the centre houses a library, meditation and yoga halls, lecture spaces and cultural facilities.
Designed to serve more than 10,000 students and young people annually, the institution aims to promote leadership, character-building and spiritual values inspired by Vivekananda's teachings. The initiative also reinforces the government's emphasis on integrating cultural heritage with youth empowerment.
Development, Industrial Growth and Political Messaging
The Bhogapuram airport, semiconductor project and renewable energy infrastructure collectively signal a strategic effort to position Andhra Pradesh as an emerging hub for aviation, electronics manufacturing and green energy. These investments complement India's broader push for self-reliance in advanced technology and sustainable infrastructure.
Simultaneously, the Mysuru programme reflects the government's continued focus on cultural outreach by linking national development with the ideals of Swami Vivekananda. With major investments spread across two politically significant southern states, the visit underscores a broader strategy of balancing economic transformation, regional development and cultural engagement.
