In a significant political development, Elon Musk has launched a new political party in the United States, dubbed the America Party. This move comes amidst a public fallout with his former ally, US President Donald Trump, and aims to challenge what Musk describes as the country's "one-party system."
Musk, formerly a major political donor to Trump's 2024 campaign, expressed fierce opposition to Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill," labeling it a "disgusting abomination" that would exacerbate the US national debt. On his social media platform X, Musk declared, "When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom."
The tech billionaire outlined his strategy to disrupt the existing political landscape, referencing Epaminondas's tactics to break Spartan invincibility. When questioned about his potential political aspirations, Musk hinted at contesting elections "Next Year," implying the 2026 mid-term elections.
Musk's decision follows a poll he conducted on X, which gauged public interest in a new political party. The survey, posted on US Independence Day, garnered over 1.2 million responses, with a two-to-one majority favoring a new party. To symbolize his stance, Musk shared a meme of a two-headed snake captioned "End the Uniparty."
The public spat between Musk and Trump escalated when Trump reportedly threatened to cut federal subsidies to Musk's companies and deport the SpaceX CEO. Musk had previously vowed to use his resources to unseat lawmakers who, despite campaigning on reduced federal spending, supported the "One Big Beautiful Bill," which experts predict will add $3.4 trillion to the US deficit over a decade. Musk has pledged to "laser-focus" on vulnerable lawmakers, aiming to become the "deciding vote" on critical legislation
