India’s Youth and the Global Employment Dream
In a rapidly globalizing world, overseas employment opportunities are no longer a luxury but a vital pathway for skilled workers seeking professional growth and better livelihoods. For India’s young and ambitious workforce, the desire to work abroad has never been stronger. A recent survey conducted by AI-powered global talent mobility platform Tern Group reveals that 92% of Indian youth would pursue international careers if offered visa-free entry and proper guidance.
With countries like Germany, the UK, the GCC nations, and Japan battling skilled labour shortages, India stands as a reservoir of talent waiting to be tapped. Yet, despite their eagerness, countless Indian professionals find themselves hindered by a lack of information, reliable support, and safe pathways to global employment.
Survey Findings: Enthusiasm High, But Guidance Low
The Tern Group's survey, based on 2,500 professionals from high-demand sectors such as healthcare, logistics, and engineering, sheds light on the aspirations and anxieties of Indian youth. A staggering 92% said they are ready to apply for global roles—if visa, hiring, and training support are made accessible.
However, this enthusiasm is sharply contrasted by the reality on the ground. 57% of respondents admitted they lack information on how to begin the overseas job application process, highlighting a glaring gap in awareness and career guidance. Without clear resources, even the most qualified candidates struggle to find their footing.
Unethical Practices and Financial Barriers
One of the most alarming takeaways from the survey is the prevalence of immigration-related fraud. About 34.6% of respondents said they fear being misled by unreliable agents or foreign recruiters, many of whom charge hefty, often unregulated fees.
Indeed, 27% cited high service charges as a major deterrent—costs typically associated with unscrupulous operators. These financial barriers, compounded by a lack of transparency, deter many from even attempting to go abroad, despite strong global demand for their skills.
What Global Employers Seek—and What Indian Youth Need
While language support (36.5%) and quick job-matching services (63.5%) emerged as key facilitators for global employment, the survey indicates that better structured upskilling and training programs are essential for Indian youth to thrive internationally.
Tern Group CEO Avinav Nigam emphasized that India has one of the youngest, most ambitious labor forces in the world, but systemic challenges—from unregulated agents to poor access to skill-building—continue to limit global employability.
Healthcare: The Frontline of Global Talent Migration
The healthcare sector, which accounted for nearly 79% of all survey respondents, reflects both India’s strength and the world’s urgent need. With growing shortages in nations like Germany, the UK, and GCC countries, Indian healthcare professionals—ranging from nurses to dental assistants—represent an untapped reservoir of talent ready to contribute to the global health workforce.
Yet, without trusted platforms, streamlined processes, and ethical guidance, their potential remains largely unrealized.
Bridging the Global Gap with Local Solutions
The findings underscore a pressing truth: India’s youth are ready for the world—but the world must also be made ready for them. For this, governments, international recruiters, and tech-enabled mobility platforms must collaborate to remove systemic barriers, regulate recruitment practices, and expand access to skill-building and job-matching resources.
If equipped with the right tools and safe pathways, India’s ambitious workforce can become a cornerstone of the global talent economy, powering industries from healthcare to logistics—and transforming not just their own futures, but also the global landscape.
