The Uttar Pradesh government has cleared a revised ₹1,008.67-crore plan for a six-lane Chitrakoot Link Expressway, opening a new chapter in connectivity for the Bundelkhand region. The 15.172-km, access-controlled greenfield corridor will connect Chitrakoot Dham with the Bundelkhand Expressway and has been designed for speeds of up to 120 kmph.
From Four Lanes to A Six-Lane Corridor
The project has evolved from an earlier four-lane proposal estimated at about ₹940 crore. The revised plan raises the capacity to six lanes and the cost to ₹1,008.67 crore, reflecting the government’s decision to build a wider, higher-capacity link from the outset. The corridor will connect the Chitrakoot Dham area with Bharatkoop on the Bundelkhand Expressway, providing a direct connection to the existing expressway network.
The entire expenditure will be borne by the Uttar Pradesh government, with no financial participation from the Centre. Construction will follow the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model, with a global tender to select the implementing agency.
Engineered For Faster and Safer Movement
The proposed expressway will have a design width of around 110 metres and will be access-controlled, allowing traffic to move without the interruptions associated with conventional roads. The approved speed limit is up to 120 kmph, subject to applicable traffic and safety regulations.
Its infrastructure goes beyond the carriageway. The project design includes one major bridge, four minor bridges, one flyover, 17 underpasses and 23 culverts, along with toll infrastructure. Such grade-separated structures are intended to minimise direct crossings and conflict points while supporting uninterrupted traffic movement.
A New Connectivity Gateway for Chitrakoot
Chitrakoot is a major religious and tourism destination, attracting pilgrims and visitors from Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring Madhya Pradesh. The new link is expected to make access more direct by connecting the destination to the Bundelkhand Expressway network. It is also expected to facilitate movement of heavy vehicles travelling towards Satna, Rewa and Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.
Better connectivity could support tourism-related businesses, including hotels, transport operators, restaurants, local markets and other services. The project therefore has significance beyond reducing travel time: it can potentially strengthen the economic links between Chitrakoot and the wider Bundelkhand region.
Procurement Now Moves to The Next Stage
With Cabinet approval secured, the project enters the procurement phase. UPEIDA had previously floated a tender for selection of an authority’s engineer for the proposed corridor, originally described as four lanes expandable to six.
The revised project will now require updated tendering and execution arrangements. The approval does not, however, specify a final construction-completion date.
A Link That Could Reshape Regional Mobility
The Chitrakoot Link Expressway represents a focused infrastructure intervention: a relatively short corridor designed to connect a prominent pilgrimage centre with a major expressway. Its six-lane configuration, grade-separated structures and 120-kmph design speed point to an emphasis on capacity, continuity and safer high-speed movement. If executed efficiently, the corridor could become an important transport and tourism gateway for Chitrakoot while strengthening the broader connectivity architecture of Bundelkhand.
