The Indian government has officially amended the IT Rules, 2021, expanding the regulatory scope to include synthetic and AI-generated content. The Gazette notification, issued today, introduces precise definitions and compliance mandates for audio, visual, and audiovisual materials created or altered using computer resources.
For the first time, “synthetically generated information” is formally defined—covering AI-created, algorithmically manipulated, or digitally transformed content. The notification also brings manipulated media such as deepfakes under legal scrutiny, reinforcing regulatory capabilities to tackle misinformation and impersonation.
These changes lay the groundwork for stronger governance of AI-driven media and call for proactive compliance from digital platforms. Organizations leveraging generative AI must now update their content policies, audit mechanisms, and user disclosures.
This regulatory shift is a decisive move to align India's digital policy with the global realities of AI and synthetic content, ensuring platforms remain accountable and users protected.
As per Dr. Deepak Kumar Sahu, Founder, FaceOff Technologies, he said, “ we at FaceOff, we’ve built a real-time detection engine that flags and traces deepfake content with high precision. Our platform is already aligned with the government’s vision to fight synthetic media threats.”
