C. Joseph Vijay formally took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, marking one of the most dramatic political transitions in the state’s history. In a significant break from political tradition, the founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam addressed thousands of supporters at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium immediately after the swearing-in ceremony, laying out the vision for his government with repeated emphasis on transparency, women’s safety, anti-corruption governance, and the promise that there would be “no power centres” outside the elected administration.
The moment symbolized the arrival of a new political force that has disrupted Tamil Nadu’s six-decade-long DMK-AIADMK dominance.
A Historic Electoral Upset
TVK’s victory in its very first Assembly election stunned political observers across the country. The party secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly and crossed the majority mark with support from Congress, VCK, CPI, CPI(M), and IUML, taking its coalition tally to 120 MLAs.
Vijay, popularly known as “Thalapathy” in Tamil cinema, transformed his enormous fan following into a formidable political network. His campaign relied heavily on digital outreach, youth mobilisation, anti-drug messaging, and criticism of corruption and rising debt under the previous administration.
At 51, the actor-politician’s transition from cinema superstar to Chief Minister represents one of the most successful celebrity political entries in recent Indian politics. The oath-taking ceremony itself reflected his broad appeal, drawing major political figures and film personalities, including Trisha Krishnan and Rahul Gandhi.
Vijay’s Core Message: Clean Governance and Accountability
In his first speech as Chief Minister, Vijay repeatedly attempted to project himself as an ordinary citizen entrusted with extraordinary responsibility. He assured supporters that his administration would function with complete transparency and warned that there would be no hidden centres of power influencing governance.
He declared that he would not “touch a single paisa” dishonestly and promised a clean administration focused on public welfare rather than political patronage. Vijay also stressed that women’s safety would be treated as a top priority, alongside strict anti-drug enforcement measures.
Immediately after assuming office, he signed executive orders related to free domestic electricity and enhanced security measures for women, signalling the welfare-oriented direction of his government.
The Debt Debate and Fiscal Reality
A major part of Vijay’s address focused on Tamil Nadu’s financial condition. He accused the outgoing DMK government of leaving the state treasury severely strained and claimed the debt burden had crossed ₹10 lakh crore.
The figure broadly aligns with recent fiscal estimates showing Tamil Nadu’s liabilities nearing ₹10.4 lakh crore in 2026, making it one of India’s most indebted states in absolute terms. Vijay announced that his government would soon release a White Paper detailing the state’s finances between 2021 and 2026 to establish accountability before launching major new initiatives.

Vijay’s rise reflects a larger shift in Tamil Nadu politics, particularly among younger voters frustrated with corruption, unemployment, drugs, and economic uncertainty. Yet electoral success is only the beginning.
