India Balances G7 Diplomacy with Global South Leadership

Modi at G7, Strong Voice of the Global South

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on an important multi-nation European visit with bilateral engagements in Slovakia and France, followed by participation in the G7 Summit in Evian. The June 13-19 visit is being closely watched for its strategic, diplomatic, and economic significance as India deepens ties with Europe while simultaneously positioning itself as the leading voice of the Global South on global platforms.

Before departing, Modi emphasized that India would use the G7 Summit to represent not only its own interests but also the aspirations of developing nations. In a statement ahead of the visit, he said India remains committed to building “a more inclusive and equitable global order” and expressed confidence that the visit would further strengthen India’s engagement with Europe and the G7.

India’s Expanding Role in the G7 Framework

This year marks India’s eighth consecutive invitation to the G7 Summit, highlighting New Delhi’s growing strategic importance in global governance and Western-led multilateral discussions. Although India is not a formal member of the G7 grouping, its repeated participation reflects recognition of its economic influence, geopolitical relevance, and diplomatic balancing role.

At the summit, Modi is expected to raise issues concerning maritime security, digital transformation, sustainable development, economic resilience, and the priorities of developing nations. India’s positioning as a representative of the Global South has gained increasing prominence amid debates over reforming international institutions and ensuring equitable global growth.

The Global South broadly refers to developing and emerging economies that often seek greater representation in global decision-making structures. India’s ability to engage both advanced economies and developing nations gives it a unique diplomatic advantage in today’s increasingly fragmented geopolitical landscape.

Historic Slovakia Visit and Strategic Cooperation

A key highlight of the tour is Modi’s visit to Slovakia from June 14-16, the first by an Indian Prime Minister since Slovakia became independent in 1993. The visit follows recent high-level exchanges between the two countries, including President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to Slovakia in 2025 and Slovak President Peter Pellegrini’s trip to India earlier this year.

In Bratislava, Modi will hold delegation-level talks with President Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico, focusing on defense cooperation, trade, technology, and industrial partnerships. Slovakia has historically supplied defense technologies to India, but the relationship is now evolving into collaborative manufacturing and two-way defense cooperation. Significantly, Slovakia has also shown interest in procuring Indian defense technologies, reflecting India’s growing capabilities in indigenous manufacturing.

The visit will also include interactions with business leaders and a ceremonial state reception at Bratislava Castle, symbolizing the strengthening of India-Central Europe relations.

France Visit and Innovation Diplomacy

In France, Modi will participate in the G7 Summit before attending VivaTech 2026 in Paris on June 18, one of Europe’s leading technology and innovation forums. India has been designated the Official AI Country Partner for VivaTech 2026 and will showcase over 80 startups across multiple sectors.

The event highlights India’s emergence as a global innovation and digital technology hub. India’s large presence at VivaTech is expected to deepen collaboration with European technology ecosystems, particularly in artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and startup partnerships.

India’s Expanding Global Leadership Role

Modi’s European visit underscores India’s evolving global identity—as a trusted partner of Western democracies and a strong advocate for the developing world. By combining strategic diplomacy, economic partnerships, technological collaboration, and Global South advocacy, India is steadily positioning itself as a bridge between advanced economies and emerging nations. The visit also reflects how India’s voice is becoming increasingly central to conversations shaping the future global order.
